Balley Soup

As the weather grows colder I like to start cooking one of my favourite soups - Balley Soup. This recipe has been passed down though generations and was taught to me by my mother. It is a Lebanese soup specific to the village where my great grandparents came from, Beit Shalala (Chelalah). It was traditionally made with lamb but I prefer beef.

I hope one day I will be able to teach my sons and their wives this recipe, so it will continue for many more generations.

Balley Soup

  • 500 g beef mince
  • 450 g tin or bottle of pureed tomatoes
  • 1/3 cup white rice
  • 2 tspns cinnamon
  • 3 tblsps dried parsley
  • 1 tblspoon butter
  1. Place 1 cm of water and butter into large pot and melt butter.
  2. Roll mince into tiny balls and place in water / butter. Give them a gentle shake to brown them all over.
  3. Pour in tomato puree, add cinnamon, parsley and rice. Cover with 3 cm of water (If the soup looks too thick, add a little more water)
  4. Cook on medium until it bubbles then turn down to low and cook for 1 1/2 hours.
Serves 4. This soup will store in the freezer for one month. It tastes great if left in fridge overnight for flavours to blend.

Flying Kimonos - Moda Bake Shop

I have been cooking in the kitchen of Moda again and whipped up this quilt - Flying Kimonos.

It is based on a Japanese Sashiko design that resembles little arrow heads and has been created using the stunning Modern Workshop collection from Oliver + S. It is made from a strip piecing technique, cut at a 45 degree angle. Easy!

I might try this using only solids

Last Days for Annie-Maree's Giveaway

Annie-Maree is giving away some stunning indigenous fabrics in celebration of creating her first eye spy pattern - Australiana EyeSpy. Giveaway closes May 31st 2011. You can enter here.

I will be hosting another giveaway in June called 'Sharing the Love' (the love of fabric, that is). I have purchased some FQ sets and one will go to a lucky blogger. Stay tuned.

Our school and church fete is on next Sunday and I have been involved in the craft stall. I have posted some items that people from the parish and school have made on Crafty Saints. Unfortunately, I have not had time to photograph everything yet. I still have children's quilts, runners, Christmassy things and appliqued T-Shirts and singlets to add to the gallery. I entered my mini Christmas Runner from the Moda Bake Shop in their monthly competition. I enjoy making these mini skirts for gifts. Even little Christmas trees need a skirt! You can find the pattern at Stripey Mini Tree Skirt.

Quilters are Lovely People

Today I was invited to the lovely Christine's home for a day of chatting and sewing. I was privileged to sit around a table with some very talented quilters who were stitching away at applique blocks to die for. I was touched when Jessica from Scrap n Happy passed me a parcel with this gorgeous zip bag inside. Jessica had made this special gift for me as a token of her gratitude for organising something for her. It will be a treasured gift indeed.

A big thank you to Christine for your generosity and allowing me to meet your friends. They are wonderful people.

P2 Finished - Bloggers Quilt Festival

Last month, I joined the Patchwork Squared (P2) Solids Quilt-a-long hosted by Quilt Dad (Charlie Scott) and Ryan Walsh. I wanted the challenge of choosing solids, following instructions for new blocks and choosing quilting patterns to highlight each block. All the fabrics were selected from my stash. I did use a bit of artistic license and modify the blocks a little. This is my completed quilt made with an assortment of Moda (Bella Solids), Michael Miller and Kaufman (Kona Solids) fabrics. It was a fun quilt-a-long and I love the end result. Thanks guys and thank you Amy from Amy's Creative Side for hosting the Bloggers Quilt Festival. It is a great way for all us bloggers to share our love of quilting and projects that are special to us all.

P2 Block 8 Complete

A lot of motivation was required for this block. Lots of HST's and seams galore. The end result was worth it though.

One more to go and then the sashing, borders and quilting.

Tuesday's Treasure - Jasper Carrot and P2 Block 7 finished.

This is our treasure, Jasper Carrot. He came to us Christmas Eve 2009 from the most wonderful Apricot Mini Poodle breeder, Jenny ay Joystar Poodles. He has the most loving and kind temperament, just perfect for a family with boys. He is my little quilting companion and is often curled up under my feet while I sew. I cannot imagine our family without him.

Very handsome

Very sporty

Very Quilty
I finished another P2 block tonight. Two more to go and then the fun of joining them altogether and quilting them.

This month, where else but London, for THE wedding.

May QBSA headed to Nova Scotia

My swap partner asked for a log cabin, blues on one side and white the other with a yellow centre. I just had to use William Morris fabrics for the blues. Enjoy.

Bella Solids Parade

Shruti at 13 Woodhouse Road, is hosting the Bella Solids Parade. Join the fun from 1st - 31st May as Shruti introduces us to 31 beautiful Bella Solids from Moda. I was asked to showcase the Bella solid - Ivory (9900-60).

Bella Solid - Ivory 9900 - 60
This unassuming solid is very versatile. I use it instead of white to soften a quilt. I often combine ivory with reproductions, retros and moderns. The possibilities are endless. Shruti as asked me to choose three complementary solids and three prints for this exercise. These are my choices:

I chose Scarlet, Pistachio and Robins Egg to create a very bold and interesting combination. Yes, a strange combination but step back and look at the possibilities of these colours to create a fresh, modern, festive quilt.

Robins Egg 9900-85

Scarlet 9900-47

Pistachio 9900-134

I chose three fabrics from the Lovely range by Sandy Gervais for Moda. These solids highlight the main colours in Sandy's designs.
17576-11, 17578-12, 17571-11

I also pulled out of my stash some fabric from Kate Spain's 12 Days of Christmas for Moda. The chosen solids go beautifully with these prints.

The choices are limitless. So add Ivory to your stash and discover there is a bottomless pit of prints to choose from that go well with the ever versatile neutral.

Kimberly at the Fatquartershop has a full selection of these beautiful solids to lift any project. Over the years Kimberly and her staff have been very helpful in matching solids to complement any fabric from the on-line shop. I now am the proud owner of the swatch card and use it regularly to select the right basic for my quilts.

Swatches of thread and solids make it easy to find a match.
Moda have just released more solids and can be purchased from the Fatquartershop in pre-cuts.

I love the new oranges, limes and Etchings stone colour. They will all be finding their way into my stash.

So show your SOLIDarity and try them all!

Make sure you visit the Flickr Group and spend the month of May enjoying the feast of colours.
